Ubuntu has Some Different Flavors that You Need to Know About

Ubuntu comes with many flavors apart from the most official one that you must have seen in the previous post. These flavors have different advantages and disadvantages. According to your need you can choose the best flavor that suits your need. So lets start. I will not be listing them based on ranking but according to specialty.

Ubuntu - The Versatile one

The default flavor of Ubuntu is pretty well balanced for day-to-day tasks and is well organized. It is good for normal users and is having a variety of tools like Libre Office, media players etc., pre-installed on it.

Ubuntu Desktop

The default Ubuntu user interface looks good and has good user interface but is resource heavy. So, it is not recommended for installing on PCs that have very poor specifications.

My Rating

  • User Interface  -  8/10
  • Performance    -  6/10
  • Beginner Friendly  -  8.5/10

Kubuntu - The Handsome one

Kubuntu has a different desktop environment and user interface from original Ubuntu. It comes with KDE Plasma desktop environment in it. It has the best user interface but is heavier in size from the rest of Ubuntu flavors. It also comes pre-installed with all the default Ubuntu tools. It is good if you want a modern and cool-looking desktop.

Kubuntu Desktop

Though the KDE Plasma desktop environment looks good, it is very resource heavy. It is recommended installing only on a good or high-end PC for optimal performance.

My Rating

  • User Interface  -  9/10
  • Performance  -  5/10
  • Beginner Friendly  -  9.5/10

Lubuntu - The lightweight one

It is a flavor of Ubuntu aimed at providing good performance to PCs with older hardware. It has a pretty good user interface for an old PC. But, it does not have all the tools that a typical Ubuntu installation has. Also, it is not too beginner friendly. But, on the other side, it is very lightweight. It uses Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE). It is recommended for people who have some experience with Linux and an old PC.

Lubuntu Desktop

Although Lubuntu looks good, but it is not very attractive. It is not always the best option to go with lighter options compromising on functionality.

My Rating

  • User Interface  -  6/10
  • Performance  -  8/10
  • Beginner Friendly  -  5/10

Edubuntu - Perfect for Students

It is a flavor of Ubuntu made for students. As its name suggests, it focuses more on education. It has all the Ubuntu applications pre-installed but with some extra apps for students. Also its user interface is same as of Ubuntu. But its latest version was released in 2016 which makes it pretty old now.

Edubuntu Desktop

I would not recommend installing Edubuntu from security point of view because it is quite old and hasn't received an update for quite a long time. You can install Edubuntu tools in Ubuntu also.

My Rating

  • User Interface  -  8/10
  • Performance  -  6.5/10
  • Beginner Friendly  -  8.5/10
